Landlocked but Not Isolated: Malawi’s Place in Southern Africa
Malawi is not just a place on a map. Malawi is a country located in Southeastern Africa and shares its borders with Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. As a landlocked country, Malawi depends on connections with neighboring countries to access international shipping routes and global markets.
The ‘Warm Heart of Africa’ borders three nations and depends on these countries for roads, railways, ports and border crossing in order to participate in international markets. These relationships shape Malawi’s trade opportunities and influence how goods reach global markets.
Geography presents challenges but it is not a defining factor to Malawi’s economic future. Infrastructure, trade policies, investment and cooperation with neighboring nations influence just how much Malawi is able to participate in the global economy.
For Malawi, transporting goods to international markets has several stages. Goods have to travel through domestic transportation networks. Crossing national borders has to be done before even getting to a seaport. Transportation costs, delays and difficult border procedures are also added steps and can make this entire process not only more expensive but less predictable.
According to the World Bank’s February 2026 Malawi Economic Monitor, factors like landlocked geography, infrastructure weaknesses and trade barriers degrade the country’s export competitiveness. Higher transportation and logistics costs can make it more expensive for businesses to move products to market, potentially undermining their competitiveness.
Although Malawi does not have direct access to the sea, regional connections bridge the gap between Malawi and international markets.
Malawi’s Ministry of Industrialization, Business, Trade and Tourism describes the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project as an initiative involving both Mozambique and Malawi. The program aims to reduce the time and cost associated with cross-border trade and improve infrastructure.
Malawi’s geographic position is one part of a larger story about the country’s future. Understanding these challenges provides context for supporting communities throughout Malawi. Through its work in Malawi, Orant Charities supports women and communities through programs focused in healthcare, water and sanitation, agriculture, education and sustainability.
Orant Charities works on the parts that can change at the local level. We help farmers grow more on their own land through irrigation and agriculture training. We drill wells so families don’t have to walk for water. We run a health centre so a clinic visit doesn’t mean a long, expensive trip. Every program is run by our 100% Malawian team.
The more a community can grow, earn and treat at home, the less it depends on the landlocked export process. Give today and help families in Kasese build a future that doesn’t depend on the long road to the coast.
