Malawi Is Building an Airport City — And It's Just the Beginning
When most people think of Malawi, they picture the lake, the mountains, and the warmth of its people. They don't always picture cranes, construction, and a 700-hectare development rising up around an international airport. But that is exactly what is happening in Lilongwe — and it says a great deal about where Malawi is headed.
LLW Expansion Project in Lilongwe, Malawi
Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. In 2019, three brand new terminal buildings were completed and handed over to the Malawian government, funded through Japan's Official Development Assistance program. The upgrade was significant: passenger handling capacity jumped from 50 people per hour to 50-, a tenfold increase. A new radar surveillance system was installed alongside the terminals, improving safety and operational efficiency for every aircraft entering Malawian airspace.
But the bigger story is what is coming next. In April 2025, Malawi's Airport Developments Limited allocated up to 700 hectares of land adjacent to Kamuzu International Airport for the development of what is being called an “Airport City.” The vision is ambitious — hotels, commercial facilities, an aviation university campus, and housing, all clustered around the airport as a new economic engine for the region. The first phase of groundbreaking was anticipated for late 2025, driven by public-private partnerships and a clear signal from the Malawian government that aviation is central to its long-term economic plan.
For a landlocked country that has historically struggled with connectivity and infrastructure, this is not a small thing. Airports are more than places where planes land. They are the front doors of nations. Airports will always be the first impression a visiting investor, tourist, or aid worker will experience. An upgraded, expanding Kamuzu International Airport tells the world that Malawi is open, growing, and serious about its future.
At Orant Charities, we have spent decades working alongside the communities of Malawi. We have seen firsthand how infrastructure of all types, whether a school, a road, or a new well can change the trajectory of a village.
The story of Kamuzu International Airport is part of that same larger story: a country building itself, piece by piece, with its people at the center of every decision.
