Microfinancing’s Powerful Impact in Malawi

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, microfinancing is “financial services, especially microloans, provided to impoverished individuals and groups in poor and developing regions.” 

Microfinancing allows people to take out small business loans and helps them jumpstart their businesses or expand. It is an important tool for people who may not have access to traditional banking services. 

Microloans provide an opportunity for financial independence and establish a reliable source of income. These loans provide capital that was otherwise missing for people to start their own businesses. 

This is especially important for women in Malawi. Women are often the main caretakers in the household or community. It is difficult to start a business when financial barriers are in place. To counter this barrier, Orant Charities has the FEM program, Financially Empowering Microloans for Women, an initiative established in 2017. This program provides women in Malawi with access to microfinance opportunities. Women are able to apply for small business loans interest-free and run their businesses independently. They are given a five-month period to pay back their loans. Once the loan is repaid, they have the option to reapply for another loan.

The benefits of microfinance do not only extend to the business owners receiving the loans. When the business grows, it contributes to the economy through job opportunities, purchasing from other businesses and providing services and material goods to the community. 

In 2025, Orant Charities distributed $42,346 in microloans to women in Malawi. This funding provided women with much-needed capital in order to pursue their small business goals. This program helps small businesses thrive and grow into medium-sized businesses. 

Microloans create a cycle of opportunity, one that benefits women, their families and their community. A woman receives a loan, invests in her business or jumpstarts her business, earns income for her family and repays the loan. She then has the opportunity to reapply for another loan to expand her business even further. As more women take on financial independence, their communities and families thrive.
