Energy and Environment Impact 2025 Recap
There is no question that climate change is affecting countries all around the world. But what does this mean for Malawi specifically?
Although weather patterns in Malawi are unpredictable, cyclones, floods and droughts often leave residents susceptible to devastating impacts like deforestation, famine, disease and a loss of harvest.
Earlier this year in March, 13 died after four days of heavy rains and floods. 9,598 households were affected by the flooding. Residents reported property, livestock and crops were washed away.
This is just one of many instances where climate change has resulted in devastating impacts for the community.
The Energy and Environment Program by Orant Charities aims to decrease the harmful impacts of climate change in Malawi by advocating for environmental protection, proper waste management and affordable solar energy accessibility.
Orant Charities was able to install four solar systems at two secondary schools and distributed 356 mini solar systems to households in 2025. Not only is solar energy a cleaner source of energy but this allows families to have access to light and power even when the sun goes down.
On an academic level, students at the Tchale and Ngala Community Day Secondary Schools were able to use the solar power to attend night reading sessions and academic performances increased as a result.
Along with the new installation of solar systems, 172 cookstoves were built for households and 8,230 trees were planted. These cookstoves and trees are a direct response to the deforestation in Malawi. By having these energy-efficient cookstoves easily available, the reliance on firewood decreases exponentially.
Orant Charities was able to do this in partnership with Opulence Malawi, a nonprofit organization that aims to empower local communities to overcome poverty, address the root causes of inequality and has programs in education, economic empowerment, water sanitation, hygiene and food security.
