Why Playing Bingo Can Change a Student’s Future in Malawi

The Early Years: A Beginning Not Guaranteed

A child’s educational journey ideally begins with early childhood education. This foundation helps children develop skills essential for success in later years. However, in Malawi, many children do not have the privilege of attending nursery or kindergarten.

Through the efforts of the Malawi Government and communities, some villages now have Community-Based Childcare Centres (CBCCs). These centres provide children with an opportunity to learn basic skills and prepare for primary school. Yet access remains limited. Many children still enter Standard 1 without this important preparation, beginning their academic journey already at a disadvantage.

Primary School: Free, But Not Without Cost

Primary school in Malawi runs from Standard 1 to Standard 8, and while tuition is free, education is far from cost-free.

Students need notebooks, textbooks, uniforms, and basic supplies. For many families, these costs are overwhelming. Food insecurity adds another layer of hardship. It is difficult, if not impossible, for a child to concentrate in class on an empty stomach.

As a result, many students drop out before reaching Standard 8. Those who persevere face another major hurdle: the Primary School Leaving Certificate Examination, administered by the Malawi National Examinations Board. Students must pay examination fees to sit for these exams. Without payment, years of effort can end without certification.

Secondary School: Opportunity With Obstacles

For students who pass, selection into secondary school is highly competitive. Many attend Community Day Secondary Schools, which require long daily travel. Others attend conventional, district, or national secondary schools.

Although secondary school tuition has recently been removed, significant costs remain. Students still need uniforms, learning materials, accommodation in some cases, and daily food. Many schools lack libraries, laboratories, and adequate infrastructure, factors that directly impact learning quality and student performance.

Thus, financial pressure forces many capable students to drop out before completing their secondary education.

University: The Hardest Barrier Yet

Reaching university is an extraordinary achievement, but it is not the end of the struggle. To be admitted into a public university, students must earn strong credits in at least six subjects. Competition is intense, and only a small percentage are selected. Those who are not selected often turn to private universities, where tuition costs are significantly higher.

Even students admitted to public universities face major financial burdens. Tuition, accommodation, food, and learning materials all require funding. Many students begin university with hope and determination but are forced to drop out due to financial constraints. Imagine overcoming every obstacle, from Standard 1 to university, only to stop short of graduation because of lack of support.

This is the reality for many students in Malawi.
